The altar is built by your high priest and is used for sacrificing enemy priests. There are three level of altars and a sacrifice is required to upgrade the altar to the next level. While an altar can be built anywhere, it can only be upgraded on your home island. Once that is done, it will carry over to your next game and until another priest is sacrificed upon it, it will retain its level. --- Sudden Death 23:09, 20 April 2006 (BST)

Askeld Urvonnus, High Priest of Nimbus

On the Altar enemy High Priests are Sacrificed to the Furies.
Each Altar has five runes - Sun, Wind, Rain, Thunder and Storm - which must be filled by your High Priest in order to complete a Sacrifice.

As each rune is filled, one of the supporting bridges dissolves.
When all five are gone, the enemy Priest plunges into the abyss.
If an Altar is destroyed in mid-sacrifice, the captured Priest will be freed.

Sacrifice is the ultimate goal of the game. In singleplayer, you need to sacrifice enemy Priests to proceed to next mission. In multiplayer however, you can either choose a new knowledge, or upgrade your altar for a far more advanced technology, or gain 5000 Storm Power. If you already have every knowledge available, you can choose to get a new Rank too.

Altar has three level upgrade stages. If you choose to upgrade your Altar on your home Island in multiplayer game, it will stay there - upgraded, for the next battle.
